THE BROOME DUSTERS FAMOUS BRAWL INSPIRED FIGHT SCENE IN THE MOVIE SLAPSHOT

Called “The 4-Hour War” by the Evening Press, it is a game forgotten in modern hockey record books but immortalized forever in the 1977 film, “Slap Shot.” The 192 penalty minutes piled up by the Broome Dusters and Syracuse Blazers in front of a sellout crowd at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena on Jan. 15, 1975 — a then-North American Hockey League record — only tell half the story.

According to the scribings of then-beat reporter and former Press & Sun-Bulletin sports editor Charlie Jaworski, a first-period skirmish led to 10 fighting majors, six 10 minute majors and four game misconducts. But that was just the dessert — the main course was served before the game even started. Fueled by Blazers forward Gary Sittler’s cheap shot a week earlier on Dusters goalie Roger Kosar, who was already playing with a broken jaw, Broome was looking for revenge.

After some trash talking by the Dusters to Sittler during warmups, Broome’s Billy Gratton charged across the red line and the fight was on.
Not helping matters was the appearance in the stands of legendary goon Bill Goldthorpe, who last played for the Blazers and was the inspiration for the infamous “Slap Shot”character, Ogie Ogilthorpe. Goldthorpe, known for his blonde afro, eventually jumped onto the ice in civilian clothes to attack the Dusters.

Jaworski wrote: “There were times when (Goldthorpe) brandished a stick, and it’s not clear whether the gash he opened up over (center) Bernie MacNeil’s right eye was inflicted by fist or stick. Duster general manager Ron Orr traded punches with Goldthorpe as president Jim Matthews was out on the ice, and many of the game’s minor officials, along with coaches, trainers, players and everyone but a referee. But a pre-game incident was out of ref Brendan Watson’s jurisdiction.”

Ten of Binghamton’s finest were called to the arena to help restore order and several helped escort Goldthorpe out of the building. “Press photographer Dave Tinney said Goldthorpe shouted obscenities at him as he took his picture,” Jaworski writes. “A paddy-wagon was outside the arena, but Goldthorpe reportedly left in a white automobile.”

NAHL commissioner Bob Dextraze fined the Dusters $500 and the Blazers $250, and declared a ban on the presence of Goldthorpe in an NAHL arena — the ban did not last long because Goldthorpe suited up for the Dusters the next season. If the pregame festivities were subject to discipline, it would have likely rivaled the most penalized National Hockey League game (419 minutes in March 2004 between Philadelphia Flyers and Ottawa Senators).

Once things settled down, it was only a matter of time until the teams exploded again in the aforementioned first-period brawl. “For the first eight minutes, it was like feeling the earth tremor, waiting for the volcano to erupt,” Jaworski wrote. The scuffle amounted in 158 penalty minutes, including a game-high 34 for MacNeil, who later in the season was suspended indefinitely for striking a referee with a stick.

After 182 penalty minutes in the first period, the rest of the game was strangely calm. The Dusters ended up winning on Walter Johnson’s goal with 1:18 remaining.

Colorful rookie coach Wayne Clairmont was proud of his Dusters for sticking up for Kosar in both brawls: “For management it’s a personal satisfaction. The whole Duster organization has taken it on the chin from this team for a long time ... Sittler only got half of what’s coming to him.”

The two teams met again five days later but only combined for 38 penalty minutes in a 5-3 Syracuse victory.

Another dustup re-created in “Slap Shot”was a confrontation between Dusters veteran Ted McCaskill and Johnstown Jets forward Jack Carlson — whose two brothers, Steve and Jeff, were also on the Jets and appeared in “Slap Shot” as the infamous Hanson brothers. Jack could not be in the movie because he was recalled to the Edmonton Oilers prior to filming.

The scene in the movie shows two players exchanging swipes with their sticks turned down. In real life, McCaskill won the battle with a whack at Carlson’s face in a Feb. 2 game in Binghamton.

“If I could have, I would have decapitated him,” McCaskill told Jaworski after the game. “This is my last year in hockey, and I don’t care if I get a life suspension, but I’m going to take someone with me, too.”

All three Carlson brothers were famous for their goonish ways and hated by opposing teams. Said Clairmont: “Together they’re tough, but separate they’re like three little rats.”

The Legendary Bill Goldthorpe

Bill Goldthorpe, known as the Thunder Bay Mauler, did not get his nickname because he was a proficient scorer.
One of the legendary goons of the North American Hockey League in the 1970s (and the inspiration for the character Ogie Ogilthorpe in the movie "Slap Shot"), Goldthorpe played 19 games for the Broome Dusters in 1975-76.

But his greatest Binghamton hockey moment came the year before, in January 1975, when watching the Dusters play the Syracuse Blazers, his current team, from the stands of the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.During warmups, Goldthorpe jumped over the glass and challenged Dusters defenseman Gary Jaquith to a fight, sparking an epic brawl.

According to the "Making of Slap Shot" by Jonathon Jackson, at one point Dusters manager Ron Orr, brother of the legendary defenseman Bobby Orr, raced across the ice and sucker punched Goldthorpe, who was busy with someone else.
